With lies and evil whisperings and false counsel
Melkor kindled the hearts of the Noldor to strife
Fiercest burned the new flame of desire for freedom and wider realms
In the eager heart of Fëanor and Melkor laughed in his secrecy
Melkor saw that these lies were smouldering,
And that pride and anger were awake among the Noldor,
He spoke to them concerning weapons
Fëanor made a secret forge, of which not even Melkor was aware
And there he tempered fell swords for himself and for his sons
He began openly to speak words of rebellion against the Valar.

King and father, wilt thou not restrain the pride of our brother, Curufinwë

So it is, even as I guessed . My half-brother would be before me with my father,
In this as in all other matters.
he drew his sword
Get thee gone, and take thy due place!
Point of his sword set against Fingolfin's breast.
This is sharper than thy tongue.

Tears unnumbered ye shall shed and the Valar will fence Valinor against you
Not even the echo of your lamentation shall pass over the mountains


Melkor spoke with Fëanor before his doors
Behold the truth of all that I have spoken,
If the heart of Fëanor is yet free I will aid him.
For am I not Vala?
Here is a strong place, and well guarded
but think not that the Silmarils will lie safe in
any treasury within the realm of the Valar!

Unlight of Ungoliant rose up
Even to the roots of the Trees,
Melkor sprang upon the mound
And with his black spear he smote each Tree to its core
Sap poured forth as it were their blood
Ungoliant sucked it up,
Till they were drained
Melkor came to the house of Fëanor,
Slew Finwë before his doors
Fëanor rose and cursed Melkor
Naming him Morgoth, the Black Foe of the World
His father was dearer to him than the Light of Valinor
Why, O people of the Noldor,' why should we server the Valar.
In Cuiviénen sweet ran the waters under unclouded stars
There they lie still and await us
who in our folly forsook them. Let the cowards keep this city!
After Morgoth to the ends of the Earth!

No ship would the Teleri lend, nor help in the building
Then swords were drawn, and a bitter fight was fought
Many were slain
The Teleri were overcome
The Noldor drew away their white ships
They beheld suddenly a dark figure standing high upon a rock that looked down upon the shore
